Ive been following the 2009 Super Bowl progress for the last few weeks. In doing so, I read tons of player and team stats, articles on coaches and their philosophies and many other topical NFL discussions. While reading these articles on the net, I came across one blog, SportsAgentBlog.com where the writer interview Leigh Steinberg.
Leigh Steinberg was very well known for having been inspirational in the movie Jerry Maguire, starring Tom Cruise. He was the sports agent who represented some of the greatest names in NFL football history, like Joe Montana, Steve Young and Warren Moon.
I read with great interest how Leigh Steinberg is trying to turn this industry into one that is build on mutual trust, respect and integrity. He is really trying to further the collaboration amongst sports agents to ensure a more positive and encouraging environment.
Leigh Steinber, as I learned from the interview, is really a person who cares about his clients / athletes and shares with them that giving back to society is or should be one of their top priorities. Sports is such as revered past time that there are plenty of young adults who view the sports athlete as a role model.
Leigh Steinberg is a man of integrity. This candid interview also helped me to understand why he believes that we should all care about what is happening to our planet. It goes on to describe how he is practicing what he preaches where he is spending his time and efforts and how he is helping to green up the field of sports. I was duly impressed by his efforts, especially because of my own feelings about the sports industry.
From my perspective, I have always had the impression that athletes and sports agents didnt care about anything but show me the money. There have been plenty of examples of greedy athletes and self-promoting sports agents who give the industry a bad reputation.
Mr. Steinberg is truly a multi-dimensional caring individual. I don't get the sense that he's just about the money. One of the examples that they gave is how Leigh Steinberg is advocating for more regulation and studies around how athletes incur and are diagnosed for concussions. He believes this must be better understood and attended to.
Athletes seem to lean toward a particular political party, based on a description by Leigh Steinberg. It generally stems from the amount of taxes that they pay even from their first paycheck. I found that particular section in the blog pretty interesting because I never put athletes into that context before.
Reading this blog about Leigh Steinberg made me feel that he is an honorable individual, beyond being a sports agent. Hes someone who genuinely cares about things outside of just making money. If it was just about making money, and he made plenty of it, he wouldnt have donated so much money to charities and causes, as well as promote the greening of sports.
I encourage any who reads my article to take the time and read this blog. Youll understand the difference between a sports agent and quality, compassionate human being. - 2275
