Even though you will be spending extra time training your rat, make sure that you take time to ensure they have a stimulating environment to live in. You will be at work or school, or asleep, so give your rat things to do whilst you are not around. Remember training is not everything. It is just as important to give your rat plenty of cuddles and time out. You should keep up the training, as rats have plenty of exploring to do and may forget the new tricks.

Litter Training

Litter box training is important, as it makes life a whole lot easier for everyone. It will give you more time, as you wont have to clean out the cage as often and your rat will be happy in a clean environment.

The first step is to make a litter tray out of something such as the bottom of a tissue box or a shoe box. Put some bedding in it, so it looks a bit inviting and then place it in your ratties cage. If there is already one area your rat likes to go to the toilet put it there.

Place your ratty into his new litter tray. Move the poops your rats have done into the box, so that they can smell it there. This will encourage them to go there again. When you find that they have pooped outside the litter tray simply move the poops inside the box again.

It may take time, but persevere and they will learn. Rats like to be clean too you know.

Recognizing Their Name

This is an excellent place to start with your training. It will make your party tricks a lot easier to learn and it is easy to teach.

Every time you say your rats name pick it up and give it a cuddle or even a little treat (it's favourite food). After a while you can drum you hand on the floor and call it's name and again, when it comes to you give it a little treat.

It won't be long before you can call your rat by name and it will come to you. Continue to reward it with tickles, kisses and of course the occasional treat.

Jump

Place your ratty on your lap and make a little gap between your legs. In one hand hold a delicious treat. Your ratty will have to jump the gap to get to the treat. Wave the treat and say "jump Wombat" (insert your rats name here) When your pet has done it give them the treat and lots of praise. Get them to do it a few times. Soon they will do it even without a treat, but don't forget plenty of praise.

Clapping

This is a cute one. Hold a delicious treat above your ratties head (a thin piece of carrot dipped in hommous is ideal). Say "clap Wombat" and he will reach up for the treat, lift it up a little so his hands meet. Each time he "claps" say "good boy Wombat" and after say three times give him the treat and let him enjoy it, as well as lots of praise from his favourite person (you I hope).

Solving Behavioral Problems

If your rat keeps trying to chew the wires or do other naughty ratty things, don't get mad, just spray a little water from the plant mister in his direction and say no. But never be mean to your ratty. They can't help being so inquisitive after all.

Clicker Training

Can you really clicker train a rat? Of course you can. If you have a trusting and fun relationship with your ratty anything is possible.

First get a clicker from a pet shop or online. Have your ratties favourite food at the ready (give yourself a quota of treats for the day so as not to overfeed) Give your rat the irresistible treat and at the exact time he takes the treat click the clicker.

After a while of doing this, wait for ratty to do something. It can be anything from simply moving, raising a leg, turning around, yawning, whatever he may do. When he does it click the clicker and give a treat at the exact same time. Repeat this. It won't be long until your ratty realises that he is controlling the game. He can decide when he gets the treat. You will find that he starts to repeat behaviours to get a click and a treat and will really start to enjoy the game.

Why the clicker?

You can train your rat without a clicker and simply use treats on their own, but if you do choose to use a clicker this will give your rat the definite message that "yes that is what I want you to do". There will be no need to scold, which can be very detrimental to the learning process. The rat will work out what he needs to do after you have clicked the same action a few times. Treats are a good way to train, but a clicker gives that definite yes that your pet craves. It will definitely make training easier for you.

If your ratty is intolerant of the clicking sound (they have sensitive ears) you can use the lid from a jar, which has a security button. You can simply pop this little button in the lid, instead of a clicker.

It is up to you. You should judge how your ratty reacts to the click sound.

Word Commands with the clicker

After a while you can add word commands to your clicker training. For example if you have trained your rat to clap, and he has started to clap to get a click and a treat, say "clap Wombat" when he is doing it and then say "stop Wombat" when he stops give him a click and a treat. He will eventually associate the word "clap" with the action of clapping and with the click and the treat. You can choose to only reward your rat with a click and a treat when he claps on command, so as to avoid begging behaviour.

To teach your rat a new behaviour, for example pushing a ball along, you need to click and praise it at every step of the way. When he looks at the ball, click and treat, when he walks towards the ball, click and treat, when he touches the ball, click and treat, when he pushes the ball, click and treat. He will soon get the idea.

After a while you will not need to give a click and a treat every time. You may simply be able to praise. Remember keep it fun. This is playtime after all.

You can teach plenty of things with a clicker. The limit is your imagination. You can teach your rat to come to you, to sit on your shoulder as well as party tricks, such as rolling over or even dancing.

It is important to keep it short. Remember rats have a lot to do. There's exploring everything in sight for a start. Five minutes is plenty to start with. You may wish to do your first training sessions in a room where there are less distractions.

Not all rats are as trainable as others. If your rat isn't into school, enjoy playing other games instead like chasing with your hand, tickling, massaging and just watching them have lots of fun.

Keep your rats healthy. A healthy, happy ratty is the most trainable and keep them well fed too, or they'll be in no mood to do anything for you.

Combined, the elements produce a delicate balance and results in the normal state of a person's physical and mental health. This balance can be affected by internal and external factors, which can sway the elemental balance in a variety of ways. In theory, an increase in certain elements in areas that perform certain functions can sway the yin and yang balance, thus affecting a person's health.

The treatment for the condition, whether it be sinusitis, lower back pain, knee pain, migraine headaches, visual migraines, insomnia or whatever else ails the patient is ultimately determined by where the imbalance is and what caused it. For example, an excess of water that swayed the balance more to the yang in the nasal area is sometimes cited to cause problems such as colds and sinusitis. To counter this, a traditional Chinese doctor might prescribe a formula composed of herbs and more exotic ingredients to help suppress the water element and, thus, restore balance to the yin and yang.

Understanding Sewing Machine Tensions

I hate this machine! All it does is gum the threads up.

This and similar complaints are among the most common grievances expressed by sewing machine users. Excess threads bunch up under the fabric or bubble up on top of the fabric. The stitch may be fine for an inch or two, and then abruptly they screw up and the whole job is ruined.

The problems with sewing machine tensions may result from many different things. Threading is often a problem. You may have threaded your sewing machine a thousand times, but if the thread rides along the ridge of the tension discs, you get problems. Dirt, grit, gunk, and lint can cause the system to mess up. Rough spots, irregular surfaces, burrs, and rust can ruin tensions. Loosely wound bobbins, bad thread, dull needles, and of course mechanical failures can produce tension problems.

When the tensions are properly set, the top and bottom threads link inside the fabric. The stitching should flow evenly, tightly, consistently over the length and breadth of the seam. There should be no puckers, bubbles, or gobs of thread bunching up underneath or showing on top. There should be no excess thread top or bottom.

To achieve these perfect stitches the upper and lower threading must be just right. The drag or resistance of the upper tension system and the bobbin tension system must balance each other precisely.

If you think of the top and bottom thread systems like two tug of war teams, it may help us understand what is actually happening. Each team pulls on their rope. If one team pulls harder than the other, it gets more rope on its side. If the other team pulls harder, it gets the extra rope. In this case, we are talking about thread instead of rope, but the analogy still applies. Therefore, if you see extra thread on top of the fabric, what do you know? Yes, the upper thread system is pulling harder than the lower one. Or the lower one is pulling less than the upper one. In the same way, if you see excess thread on the bottom what do you know?

Remember, your goal is to provide the same or equal tension from the upper and lower threads.

First, rethread the sewing machine. Take great care to make sure everything is right. Lift the presser foot before threading the tension assembly, and put it down once your reach the needle. Test the upper tension with a little tug before your thread the needle. Presser foot up should have little drag. Presser foot down should have significant drag.

Double check the threading of the bobbin making sure the thread is smoothly wound on the bobbin. Draw the thread through the bobbin tension checking for any lint or debris that might have gotten stuck in the assembly. The thread should flow through lower tensions properly without any snags or interruptions. Generally, you do not need to adjust the bobbin tension unless you significantly change the size of thread you are using. Test the bobbin tension by drawing the thread through the tension spring. It should require a little pressure, but not a great deal. The thread should flow smoothly. IF you need to adjust the tension, there is a small usually slotted screw that presses against the tension spring. Only turn it slightly right to tighten, left to loosen. Many sewing machine users prefer to leave this adjustment to the capable care of their professional sewing machine technician.

Next, adjust the upper tension to equalize the lower tension. You may need to rely on some trial and error until you get it just right. Ignore the numbers on the tension dial, unless they are really low or really high. In this case you may need to disassemble the tension assembly to make the repair, or have a technician to do.

Sew a trial seam on scrap fabric. Sew a straight stich and then a medium zig zag. Examine the stitch quality. Continue making slight adjustments until your get a stitch that pleases you. Avoid sewing on finish fabric, until you have confidence that your stitch quality is what it should be. Avoid frustration.

You may notice irregularities on one side of a zig zag stitch and not on the other. Test and adjust until it looks the best you can make it. Some machines have design issues that make a perfect zig zag stitch almost impossible. If you want a perfect stitch and you have one of these older machine, consider getting a better machine.

Now that you understand how your sewing machine tensions work, you can use your sewing machine with renewed confidence. Make the adjustments you need when you need them. Always remember, a trip to the sewing machine shop can relieve stress when all else fails. - 2275

Playing guitar the right way

Without the proper posture, playing guitar for long periods of time can cause back strain. Here are a couple of tips about holding your guitar in the correct fashion. Pick up the guitar so that the back of the guitar rests against your stomach. If you play right handed the neck of the guitar should be aiming towards the left. Gently rest the body of the guitar against your upper right thigh. You should hold the guitar neck with your left hand and drape your right arm over the body of the guitar so that your hands can easily reach the strings. Your position should feel both comfortable and natural while you are playing guitar.

For right handed players, you will use your left hand to form the notes and chords. Bend the fingers on your left hand so they are pressing the strings down on the fret board.

The curvature of the guitar neck allows your hand to fit comfortably into the shape of the neck. Your thumb arches easily over the top of the neck. This thumb position is best for constructing chords. Another option, which is most common when playing guitar scales, is to press your left thumb on the back of the guitar neck. Try using each thumb position, and choose the one that is most comfortable.

Strum the strings with your right hand to make sounds. Position your right arm over the body of the guitar. Your right bicep should rest on the top of the guitar. Position your right hand in front of the guitar's sound hole. When playing guitar, the sound comes out of the sound hole.

Many people chose to play guitar with a pick. In order to use a pick it should be held between the forefinger and thumb of your dominant hand. Then the pick is pulled across the strings in order to "strum". It is similar to plucking, but more pressure is necessary then you would use with just your fingers.

If you're left handed, you'll be happy to know that guitars are available for left-handed players. If you can't find a suitable one for playing guitar left-handed, simply buy a regular guitar and have re-stringing done to reverse the order of the strings.

When playing guitar, holding the instrument properly as well as maintaining a good posture permits you to play longer and is crucial to achieving the correct tone. Get into the habit of starting properly and it will serve you well. - 2275
